Frequently Asked Questions
What is firestone rubbercover membrane?
Firestone rubbercover epdm is a 100% cured single-ply roofing membrane made of a synthetic rubber ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer. Since 1980, more than 1,000,000,000 square metres of firestone epdm membranes have been successfully installed on commercial, industrial and residential roofs worldwide. Various roll sizes, the biggest being 15m wide and 61m long.
Are there different types of firestone rubber cover? Yes;
- 1, firestone durable standard grade membrane, 1.1mm thickness
- 2, firestone heavy duty premium grade 1.52mm thickness
- 3, firestone durable 1.1mm thickness flame retardant membrane
Our surveyor will advise you on the most appropriate membrane
Does the membrane have an up- and downside?
No, there is no difference between the top and bottom of the membrane. On fire-rated (fr grade) membrane, there is clear wording stating which side this membrane should be laid.
How long will the membrane last?
The membranes offer unmatched resistance to uv radiation, ozone, alkali rains and high or low temperatures. Recent studies show that the membrane can have a life expectancy of up to 50 years, even when exposed to sunlight.
Will the membrane require any protective coat?
No, the membrane is totally uv stable and requires no chippings, ballast or solar reflective paint.
Is the installation of the membrane weather dependent?
Yes, the minimum temperature for application of the adhesives is +5ºc and the maximum humidity is 80%. If the temperature is likely to drop below freezing during the following 48 hours after application, firestone bonding adhesive must be used instead.
Can epdm be used for green roofs?
Yes, perfect for green roofs. Most residential roofs have no joints, so nothing to fail. Even large commercial roofs can have little or no joints. We do recommend a roof barrier with green roof installations.
How can the membrane be repaired in case of damage?
For flat areas, the membrane can be easily repaired with a piece of quickseam sa flashing. For damage at angle changes, a quickseam corner flashing patch must be used instead.
Is the membrane available in different colours?
No, the membrane is only available in slate grey (light black).
Which substrates can I adhere the membrane to?
Either osb3 sterling board or plywood timber, but smooth concrete and tissue-faced insulation boards are also suitable. Note that new concrete should be fully cured before membrane installation and this takes a minimum of 28 days.
Can I walk on a firestone rubbercover epdm roof?
Yes, the roof can be accessed for periodical maintenance, but take care to ensure no sharp objects (e.g., with a walkway such as small stones or glass) are attached to the underside of footwear. In case of regular foot traffic, the membrane must be protected with a walkway, e.g., pavers placed on protective rubber feet.
Is there a warranty for firestone rubbercover epdm membrane?
The nation uk providers will supply a 20 year material-only warranty for installations carried out by trained contractors. Please refer to the warranty section for further information.
